Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown/black chana soak in water for 10 hours
  • ¼ cup fresh coconut grated
  • ¼ cup coriander leaves chopped
  • 1.5 tbsp oil
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 pinch hing
  • Salt to taste
  • water as required

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker add soaked chana dal, 2-3 cups of water and salt, cover the lid and cook for 4-5 whistles
  2. Once the pressure released itself, open the lid and make sure that chana dal is cooked
  3. Drain the water and keep aside, add back ¼ cup of water to chana dal because the chana will absorb the salt and spice better
  4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard, cumin seeds, pinch of hing, curry leaves and fry, allow it to splutter. Also add green chillies and saute well
  5. Keep on medium flame and add boiled chana dal, salt to taste mix well and cover the lid and simmer, stir in between
  6. Simmer till the added water evaporates
  7. Turn off the flame and garnish it with coconut and coriander leaves serve with roti or chapati.
