Ingredients

  • 2 cups kenaf leaves
  • ½ cup toor dal
  • 2 tomatoes medium size
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 7-8 green chillies
  • 1 small lemon size tamarind
  • 2 glass water

Tempering

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • curry leaves few
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 10 garlic cloves crushed
  • pinch hing/asafoetida
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker add toor dal, kenaf leaves, tamarind, green chillies, tomato, turmeric, 3 garlic cloves, 2 glasses of water and few drops of oil mix well and close the lid
  2. Cook for 3 whistles, once the pressure released itself, open the lid and separate water from cooker, you can use it later
  3. Now add salt and mash it well with a masher
  4. Now put back the separated water and mix well

Tempering:

  1. Now heat oil in a pan to prepare tempering, keep on low flame and add cumin, mustard, garlic, red chilli, curry leaves, pinch of hing and mix well, allow it splutter
  2. Pour it on pappu and give a good stir

Recipe Notes

  • You can also gram dal as an alternative to Toor dal.
