Ingredients

  • ¼ cup toor dal soaked 10 minutes
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 drum sticks cut into pieces
  • ¼ cup tamarind juice
  • 1 medium size tomato chopped
  • 1 medium size onion chopped
  • 2 tbsp coconut chopped
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 inch ginger
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • 1 tsp jaggery
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 pinch hing / asafoetida
  • 4 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a cooker add soaked toor dal, 2 cups of water, 1 tsp oil, cover the lid and cook for 2 whistles
  2. In a jar add fresh coconut, coriander leaves, ginger, garlic, ¼ cup of water and blend to smooth paste
  3. In a pan add drumstick pieces, 1 cup of water, ¼ tsp of salt, mix well and cover the lid cook for 10 minutes. check the drumstick is cooked completely

  4. Once the pressure released itself open the lid of cooker, add cooked drumstick, curry leaves, onion, tomato, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt to taste and mix well. Keep on medium flame and cook until the tomato will be soft
  5. Now add blended masala, ¼ cup of water, sambar powder, coriander powder, jaggery, tamarind juice, adjust the water and mix well, cook for 2 minutes on medium flame

Tempering:

  1. Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, a pinch of hing and mix well
  2. Pour tempering on the sambar and mix well and serve hot with rice
