Ingredients

  • ¼ cup toor dal
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 lemon size tamarind soaked in water
  • 1 onion medium size chopped
  • 2 tomatoes medium size chopped
  • 3-4 cups of water
  • ½ tsp urad dal
  • ½ tsp gram dal
  • 1.5 tbsp coriander seeds
  • ¼ cup fresh coconut
  • 1 tbsp jaggary
  • 2 inch cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp fenugreek
  • ¼ tsp cumin
  • ¼ tsp mustard
  • 3 guntur red chillies
  • 3 byadagi red chillies
  • 1 dried red chilli
  • 3 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 pinch hing/asafoetida
  • few coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker add washed toor dal, 2 cups of water, oil 1 tsp and mix, cover the lid and cook for 1 whistle
  2. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan add urad dal, gram dal and all the spices, fry until they turn brown, keep on medium flame and now add coriander seeds and fry till aromatic, and finally add coconut and saute for 10 seconds
  3. Once it cooled down, put into a jar, you can add more chillies if you want. Now add tamarind, ½ cup of water and grind
  4. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and add mustard, curry leaves, red chilli and mix, now add a pinch of hing, onion and saute for a minute
  5. In a large bowl add cooked dal and grinded paste, add tomato, 3 and half cup of water, cover the lid and cook for 10 minutes on medium flame
  6. Add jaggary, salt and fried onion tempering mix and cook for another 3 minutes on medium flame, then turn off the flame
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot
