Ingredients

  • ¼ cup toor dal soak for 10 minutes
  • ¼ cup tamarind juice
  • 1 tomato medium size chopped
  • 1 onion medium size chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh coconut chopped
  • few coriander leaves
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 1 dry red chilli
  • 1 pinch hing /asafoetida
  • 6-7 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 radish chopped
  • salt to taste
  • water as required

Instructions

  1. In a cooker add soaked toor dal, 2 cups of water, 1 tsp oil cover the lid and cook for 2 whistles

  2. In a jar add fresh coconut, garlic, ginger, coriander leaves, ¼ cup of water and blend to smooth
  3. Once the pressure released itself, mash the dal with a masher
  4. Add radish, onion, 4 curry leaves, turmeric, red chilli powder, salt to taste mix well and keep to boil up to 50%
  5. Now add grinded masala, tamarind juice, chopped tomato, ¼ cup of water or as required, mix well, boil till the tomato will be soft, stir in between, then add sambar powder mix well and simmer for 1 minute

Tempering:

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin & mustard seeds, garlic, dry red chilli, curry leaves, hing and mix well
  2. Pour the tempering on sambar, mix well and serve hot

Recipe Notes

  • If the radish sambar is thick, then you can add some more water and simmer for a few minutes.
